The preview for "Watchmen," the classic DC graphic novel left me salivating, utterly unable to wait for its 2009 release. Having read Allan Moore's groundbreaking epic a dozen times, I didn't know how any film-maker could translate a film version that lived up to the graphic novel. It is a story spanning several decades with numerous sub-plots. But, when the Smashing Pumpkins kicked in on the soundtrack and the slow motion action began, I knew director Zach Snyder who helmed the awful "300" was onto something good. If you haven't seen the trailer yet, you can look it up on imdb, google it or find it on youtube. It's all over the internet and worth watching a few times to catch every stunning visual and to get that pesky Pumpkins song stuck in your head.

If they do this film right, it could easily be "The Dark Knight" of 2009. I just hope they don't take the easy way out and water down the ending, which if done like the comic is sure to leave many viewers uneasy. Perhaps the most recent Batman has made it possible to make comic book films that deal with real issues. Also, I have heard rumors that the original version of "Watchmen" clocks in at over three hours running time. The studio heads are trying to get Snyder to cut it down to below two. I hope since "The Dark Knight" was so long, it has perhaps also paved the way for Snyder to have his druthers.
